This Week

1- 17th Anniversary!

This week I celebrated as I do every day the second best decision I ever made. The first obviously was my decision to follow Christ.

The second though was my decision to spend the rest of my life with Shannon. Now we have spent 17 years and I’m looking forward to the next 50 years.

Sunday was our anniversary. It was a great way to start the week. We had three incredible services at North Church. A somewhat relaxed afternoon running the kids around in last-minute preparations for school and  to gather last-minute items for a party Phaedra was hosting on Monday night.

Sunday evening, though, was party time for Shannon and me. I had made reservations at Mickey Mantle’s steakhouse in downtown Oklahoma City. We had a wonderful meal and great conversation and a nice stroll through Bricktown.

We also exchanged cards and gifts. I always enjoy receiving gifts from Shannon. But my greatest joy comes from the words she pens down for me. I have literally saved every card, letter, and note she has written me over the last 17 years.

Every so often I go back into the boxes containing those cherished words and I just sit and read and remember and enjoy.

2- School starts

This week school started back. This is always a time of mixed emotions. There is a part of me that enjoys getting back into a routine from the chaos of summer. But there is another side of me that is sad, sad because it marks another year gone.

Kids are growing up fast. I really don’t even know if it’s fair to say the term “kids” to describe Gavin, who is now a freshman in high school, and Phaedra, who is in the eighth grade.  Well I’m still hanging on to my one kid, my fifth-grader, Annabeth.

Shannon I had lunch today. We ate sushi. We love sushi!

She asked me how was doing with school starting back and all? I told her I was doing okay. I kind of lied, if you can do such a thing. I believe she really asked the question so that I would return the question to her. I did and she told me the obvious–that she too struggles with our kids growing up so fast.

I have heard it said time sure flies when you’re having fun.

Well, we must be having lots of fun!
